Charles Michel, who has served as president of the European Council since 2019, has announced his decision to step down early to stand as a Member of the European Parliament.
Michel, who is a Belgian politician, has said that he believes that law is about people and protecting their rights and freedoms. He has been passionate about politics from a young age and has served as Prime Minister of Belgium from 2014 to 2019.
The European Council, which is made up of the leaders of the 27 member states of the European Union, re-elected Michel as its president for a second term of two and a half years in June 2022. However, Michel has now decided to step down early to run for a seat in the European Parliament.
